Well, indeed, there is no money involved.
The reasoning is simple - I can not physically track and correct all the bugs in every version of SpecView. Instead I take the best from the previous version, eliminate all reported bugs (that is the point where your contribution to the project is important) and produce new, even more powerful, version. The most recent version is SpecView 2008.
Needless to say all updates have backward capabilities, meaning they support old file format (you can read files created with previous versions), and retain input/output, simulation and fitting tools designed in other, older, engines.
The original package SpecVi38a.exe does not have an expiration date, but its capabilities are quite limited and we recommend an upgrade of the simulation engine to the most recent version - SpecView2008 download page
