Services

The Safety Office is responsible for a wide variety of functions and tasks. The Safety Coordinator and the Hazardous Waste Specialist have unique but complimentary roles in fulfilling these tasks. Below are the duties/job descriptions for both.

Safety Coordinator Duties & Responsibilities

Safety Policies

Develop, Coordinate, and Implement Departmental, University, Federal, State and Local Policies, including:
  • Chemical Hygiene Plan
  • Hazard Communication Plan
  • Laser Safety
  • Eye Protection

Hazardous Waste Specialist Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining an effective chemical waste management program for the Department
  • manage the chemical waste program in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations
  • coordinate with the Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety for disposal of hazardous wastes
  • identify chemical "unknowns" using analytical methods including GC/Mass Spec, AA, IR, and NMR
  • maintain all records concerning hazardous waste in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations
  • conduct periodic surveys of fume hoods and laboratories for compliance with current waste management regulations.
  • Assist in education and training of faculty, staff, and students in matters dealing with hazardous chemicals and hazardous waste to include reducing waste volume, rendering hazardous wastes innocuous, and complying with all pertinent state and federal regulations.
  • Assist the Safety Coordinator in responding to fire, medical, chemical emergencies and spills and in meeting the standards of Ohio House Bill 308.

Chemical Safety presently does not charge for any of its services.
