Ohio Five-OSU Summer Undergraduate Research Experience

Summer Research Internships in Chemistry and Biochemistry
at The Ohio State University

Application Deadline: February 1, 2018
Program Dates: May 21-July 27, 2018

The Ohio State University College of Arts & Sciences, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and the Five Colleges of Ohio, Inc. are co-sponsoring 10 paid summer research internships in chemistry or biochemistry in Summer 2018 for students at The College of Wooster, Denison University, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, and Ohio Wesleyan University.  The 10-week program from May 21 to July 27, 2018, will partner interns with Ohio State University faculty members in OSU chemistry and biochemistry laboratories, where the interns will conduct individual faculty-mentored projects that support the research priorities of the lab.  At OSU, students will gain experience working in an R-1 university laboratory alongside senior faculty and OSU undergraduates, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, an ideal introduction to the graduate school research experience. Students will conclude their internship at a capstone event at OSU, co-sponsored by its Undergraduate Research Office, where they will present their research to OSU faculty and faculty and academic deans from their home institution, followed by a presentation at their college early in the fall semester.
The program is open to any Ohio Five chemistry or biochemistry major with a special focus on students completing their sophomore years. Students in other majors who have completed foundational classes in chemistry and biochemistry are also eligible to apply. Those who initiate research programs they wish to continue as part of their major and its concluding research project may be invited to continue their research activities with OSU following the internship.  The program is especially suited to students interested in a graduate degree in chemistry or related areas that they may consider pursuing at OSU.
Students will receive a stipend of $4,000 for the 10-weeks of full-time research and housing in a double room at OSU in its conference housing at no cost to the intern.  Participants may elect to participate in OSU’s dining service by purchasing a meal card through payroll deduction from their stipend. Students will also participate in OSU’s Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI) programming from the OSU Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry.
To apply, students should submit an application, transcript, resume, a letter of reference from a faculty member or someone else who knows the student’s scientific ability well, and a cover letter explaining their areas of interest in chemistry or biochemistry, description of previous laboratory or research experience, college coursework in science and mathematics to be completed by the end of the 2017-18 academic year, and plans for the future, to The Five Colleges of Ohio by February 1, 2018.  Applications are submitted online and a letter of reference should be sent by email to Carol Temerson, Program and Budget Coordinator, Five Colleges of Ohio, Inc., at temersonc@ohio5.org.  Selection of the interns will be made in consultation with the chairs of each Ohio Five chemistry department by The Ohio State University Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Candidates will be notified by March 1.
