Title: Advancing Energy Storage Through Materials
Addressing energy requirements on a global scale is a pressing scientific challenge for the future. Full implementation of renewable forms of energy generation, plug-in hybrid vehicles, and electric vehicles depend on the availability of appropriate forms of energy storage.
When envisioning the batteries needed to address these emerging applications, important limitations are battery lifetimes as well as the supply and cost of electroactive materials. This presentation will consider strategies to extend battery lifetimes using inspiration from batteries designed for implantable medical devices. Further, materials that are earth abundant such as manganese (Mn) or iron (Fe) based redox centers will be explored as alternatives to cobalt (Co) containing cathodes in common use today. Finally, the environmental impact of the widespread deployment of large scale batteries will be considered demonstrating opportunity for the regeneration and reuse of battery materials and components.
