Title: Drops Behaving Badly

Surface tension is a ubiquitous property of liquid surfaces and determines the shape of an oil drop in an emulsion or a rain drop on a surface. If surfactants are used to reduce the surface tension to very low values, unexpected behaviour arises.  In many applications, the surface tension is not constant in time and space due to evaporation, diffusion of surfactants, or thermal gradients.  The properties of the surface then couple to the fluid mechanics of the system giving rise to complex and often perplexing behaviour.  This talk will provide a series of vignettes showing ‘drops behaving badly’ and describe our attempts to understand their delinquent behaviour.
