Congratulations to Mrs. Kristin Hofferberth (Huchton) for receiving Columbus Section of the American Chemical Society’s High School Teacher of the Year award! Since 1965, each year the Columbus Section of the American Chemical Society has awarded the High School Chemistry Teacher of the Year Award to a chemistry teacher in Central Ohio.

Mrs. Hofferberth graduated Summa Cum Laude with her Bachelors in Chemistry here at Ohio State in 2001 and also got her masters at Ohio State in 2002 for secondary science education.  She has been a chemistry teacher for seven years and has been at Mount Vernon High School for the past four. She was also previously a lab instructor for six years at Kenyon College. Mrs. Hofferberth is a current member of the ACS and also the American Association of Chemistry Teachers. She has taken part in various professional development courses over the past five years, including courses at Miami University, Ohio Northern University, Kenyon College, and Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

In addition to teaching chemistry, Mrs. Hofferberth serves as the advisor to her school’s National Honor Society and has participated multiple times in the Knox County “Girls in Science Day” event. Her coworkers describe her as “a passionate teacher at her school who teaches with boundless enthusiasm for science. She consistently goes above and beyond the normal teaching day to meet the needs of her students.” Mrs. Hofferberth will be recognized at the Columbus Section’s May meeting and her school will be awarded a cash prize.
