Chemistry and Biochemistry Food Drive Raises Thousands for Those in Need

This year’s annual Chemistry and Biochemistry Food Drive raised a whopping $3,769 in cash and canned food items for those in the Columbus community who are in need this season. The project started about five years ago, with Dr. Tom Magliery, Associate Professor and Director and Graduate Studies Committee Chair, at the forefront. A member from the Magliery group also approached Tami Gerrard, Program Assistant, and asked her to assist with the operation. It was then that the ball would really start rolling. During the early stages, Dr. Magliery’s research group consistently raised the most money, that is, until Dr. Vicki Wysocki came into the picture. Dr. Wysocki would give Dr. Magliery a run for his money, introducing a whole new element of friendly competition. Dr. Magliery says the food drive is “exciting and good for an important cause.” As for his competitors, he says “The competition is fun and I hope that there’s even more competition next year, with more groups involved.”

This year, the Wysocki group and the Magliery group raised a combined total of an impressive $2,200, with the CBC Staff not far behind. Although the Wysocki group did manage to come in first place and will be awarded pizza, it detracts nothing from the fact that all of the participating groups performed an astounding act of kindness and made a difference in many people’s lives. Tami says the results for this year were good but “I believe  ̶  I know that we can do even better next year.” She, too, hopes to get more groups involved next year and is open to suggestions that might make it easier for more groups to participate, such as times during the year that might work better for everyone. Until then, let’s congratulate everyone for a job well done. Our Staff and Faculty not only care about making differences in the lives of our students, but in the lives of our Columbus community members as well!
