John Herbert Now an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Fellow

Head shot of John Herbert
Congratulations to Dr. Herbert for becoming an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellow. He is a quantum chemistry researcher whose research group goal is to extend ab initio electronic structure theory (a.k.a .quantum chemistry) into the condensed-phase environments, where most chemistry transpires. This Fellowship is awarded to scientists and scholars who have completed their doctorate less than 12 years ago, as well as working at at least the level of Assistant Professor or Junior Research Group Leader. As a Fellow, Dr. Herbert will be spending time with collaborators Professor Andreas Dreuw at the University of Heidelberg and Professor Georg Jansen at the University of Duisburg-Essen, both in Germany. He will spend an exciting 6-18 months total doing his research abroad.

Dr. Herbert graduated from Kansas State University in 1998, where he was a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar, with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He was also a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellow with John Harriman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he received a Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 2003. He later went on to do postdoctoral work with Anne McCoy here at The Ohio State University and then with Martin Head-Gordon at the University of California-Berkeley, where he was a National Science Foundation Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow. In addition to his impressive personal education endeavors, Dr. Herbert has since won many an award and joined Ohio State faculty in 2006.
