CHEM 1101

Chemistry and Society

The course will examine the dilemma that we face in our modern world of attempting to balance the great benefits of modern chemical sciences and technology with the risks that accompany those benefits, through the lens of chemicals that have changed the world around us. This course includes a laboratory experience. Prereq: Math 1050, or an ACT math subscore of 22 or higher that is less than two years old, or satisfactory score on Ohio State Math Placement Test. Not open to students with credit for 1100, 1110, 1210, 1610, 1910H, or any Chem course that uses these courses as prerequisites.

Elementary Chemistry

Introductory chemistry for non-science majors, including dimensional analysis, atomic structure, bonding, chemical reactions, states of matter, solutions, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, along with topics in organic and biological chemistry. Prereq: Math 1073, 1074, 1075 or above; Math Placement Level L, M, N, or R; or ACT Math subscore of 22 or higher that is less than 2 years old. CHEM 1206

Foundations 1 of General Chemistry

Chem 1206 is the first course in a two-course series, for science majors, covering units & measurement, atomic structure, electron configuration, periodic trends, bonding, and molecular structure. The chemistry content is covered in the same depth and rigor as in Chem 1210, and is about 1/2 of the Chem 1210 content. Additionally, metacognitive learning strategies are taught in the course. Prereq or concur: Math Placement Level L or M, Math 1120, 1130, 1131, 1140, 1148, 1150, or above. Not open to students with credit for 1210, 1220, 1610, 1620, 1910H, 1920H, 1250.

CHEM 1208

Foundations 2 of General Chemistry

CHEM 1208 is second course in a two-course series, for science majors, covering the mole, stoichiometry, chemical reactions, thermochemistry, gases, liquids, and solids, paired with metacognitive learning strategies. CHEM 1208 also includes a laboratory experience, that covers labs from both CHEM 1206 and CHEM 1208 content. Credit for CHEM 1206 and CHEM 1208 is equivalent to CHEM 1210. Science and Process of Drug Development

The course focus is on the science and public policy that govern drug development. The principles of chemistry and biochemistry are applied to research and development of drug therapeutics. The drug approval process of drug safety, toxicity, and clinical trials will focus on pharmaceutical industry challenges of drug affordability, safety, and drug development impact on global public health. Physical Chemistry for Chemical Science I

This course covers quantum mechanics and spectroscopy, beginning with an overview of classical mechanics and the historical origins of quantum theory. Basic quantum mechanics problems including the particle in a box, rigid rotor, harmonic oscillator, and hydrogen atom will be discussed, leading to a description of chemical bonding and modern computational molecular orbital theory (Hartree-Fock). Neurotransmitter Chemistry

Come and explore the natural and unnatural organic molecules involved in neurotransmission.
